Well apparently winter has hit our part of Ontario, yes it’s inevitable but honestly, are you ever actually ready for that bitter cold, not to mention the snow? Ok, alright, settle down you winter lovers, I hear you, those of you that “live” for this season, I don’t understand you but I’ll humor you lol!!!

This past week we decided it was time to gather and have a Funky Monkey staff sewing night once again and after many deliberations, we finally settled on the perfect project for this chilly time of year….a matching set of Minky mittens and a scarf!! We gathered at Melissa’s new house and sewed away with the best background!!

I already knew we’d use the Infinity Scarf from the Shannon Fabrics Blog cause it’s the perfect pattern just as it is…and it’s free lol, so all we needed was a mitten pattern, also preferably free and after a quick search I found one from Online Fabric Store that not only provided a pattern, but also a video! It was written for fleece with a minky lining but my coworker Chloe was sure it could be done in 2 layers of minky so we let her experiment first with a pair for her daughter….and she was right!! By the end of the evening, 4 out of the 5 of us had each finished the mittens and some had completed their scarves too!!! And the 5th person, well she finished hers at home a few days later, apparently she’s a bit of a slow-poke!!

Full confession time….the slow-poke was me lol!! Here comes my reason/excuse lol: Everyone else traced their mitten patterns out and then proceeded to cut them out on those lines too. I decided to trace them out but just cut roughly around them so I’d have some excess seam allowance to sew with. It took me longer to match my sewing seams up however since I sewed on the line that everyone else cut on, my mittens fit perfectly where theirs were slightly snugger! If I was to do them again, I believe I would size up, cut on the actual lines and then sew inside with a generous seam allowance!
All in all, we were all super happy with our new warm and cozy mittens and scarves!!

Have you ever made mittens out of minky? Do you love them? I think they are just the best thing except for one thing….I can’t stop rubbing them across my face or any exposed skin lol!!
I’d love to know if you have a tried and true mitten pattern that you’d like to tell us about, just in case there’s a better alternative!!
I hope you have an amazing week of creating!! Stay safe and take care of you!

Was there a trick used to have minimum milky fluff floating around everywhere, and jamming up sewing machines? Last time I used monkey I had navy blue fluff…everywhere!

I don’t think there really is a trick that I’m aware of! I personally throw it in the dryer for just a minute or two to get rid of any extra fluff and then away I go! I don’t have a problem with it jamming up my machine either thankfully!! It certainly is messy but the end result makes it all worth it in my opinion lol!!
