Well hello there friends, here I am….again….finally lol! I haven’t written a blog post in so long, I hope I remember how lol! I wish I could tell you that I’ve just been so darn busy that I haven’t had time to write a blog but the truth is, I was on holidays and then there was Thanksgiving, and I had no desire to write anything at all, and also truthfully, I haven’t had anything to write about because it’s been weeks since I sewed!!!! I wouldn’t say I’ve been in a slump, I’ve just been kind of obsessed with another hobby of mine….PUZZLES!!!! I love puzzles so much and lately I’ve just enjoyed plunking down in front of the TV and working away on them….and I sit on the floor to work on them on my coffee table so Norman loves it too because I can puzzle with one hand and play ball or tug-o-war with my other hand lol!
This past weekend I finally made my way back into my sewing room and after giving it a quick little refresh, I started not one but 2 different projects lol! I’m sewing curtains for our freshly repainted kitchen so I started that, got one panel finished and then decided to set that aside momentarily to whip up a little project that I’ve been interested in making for ages and just happens to tie into one of the items that is on sale this week!
I’m speaking of none other than the super popular BOWL COZY!!!! I’m always so intrigued by them when I see them, and every time I do see them, I always think to myself that I should make some for us….but I just never seem to get around to it, until now that is! I think they would be such a great scrap buster too, a great way to use up some of those fabrics you just love but don’t know what to make them into, as well as a fun and useful way to use up some scraps leftover from other bigger projects!
Ok so now that I actually decided to make them, all I needed to do was have a quick look at some patterns and see what size to make them……

Holy guacamole, there was literally hundreds, if not thousands of patterns for them so my “quick search” was not so quick at all!! What size should I make the squares? How big do you make the darts? Do you need one piece of Wrap & Zap or 2? Do you want points or curved edges?

Yup, that was a HUGE rabbit hole I fell down lol! Finally, with time just wasting away, I did the sophisticated technique of close your eyes and point at the computer screen, whichever tutorial/pattern your finger is touching is the one you do lol!!! So, in my case, this took me to the Free Microwave Bowl Cozy by Daisy Multifacética, which turned out to be awesome because she provides a Free Template for both pointed and rounded edges, so I decided I’d make one of each to see if I preferred one over the other!
In my exhausting search, I found that most tutorials referred to theirs as a “standard size” but they were all different sizes lol! I saw everything from 9″ to 15″, and then some recommended measuring your own bowls…..but I have 3 different sizes of bowls, does that mean I have to make 3 different sizes of cozies lol?!? Finally I just decided to do 2 sizes and see what I liked best so
So with 2 different 100% cotton fabrics, cotton thread and Wrap & Zap in hand, I was off to the races! I decided to make one 10″ set and one 11″ set, and one would be pointed and one would be rounded! Once I actually sat down to the sewing, it was so quick….which is quite often the way in sewing isn’t it lol, that darn prep takes so long! And now for my results…..here’s what I ended up with!!!!!!

The Blue Gnome fabric is made with 11″ squares to start off with and I rounded the edges on that one. The pumpkins started as 10″ squares and it has pointed corners…..the bowl in the pictures is the same bowl and as you can see, it works great for both sizes. I have a taller bowl as well and it also worked for both sizes, however, I have a wider flatter bowl and it did not fit in there at all, and wouldn’t you know it, that’s my favourite bowl to use lol! I think I will definitely re-watch one of the videos that explains how to come up with your own size so I can make a couple for them. As for the 2 sizes I made, they’re both great but I think I’ll make more of the bigger size!
Ok, it’s your turn to help me out again lol…..tell me how do you make your cozies? Do you have any tried and true tips that I must incorporate?!?
I can definitely see why so many of you love making these, they’re so fun, but also so useful! I’m now thinking that these would make lovely gifts for my family for Christmas, I feel like they’d be appreciated by all ages!
I can’t wait to read your tips and tricks, you’re all so talented and so lovely to share your thoughts with me! Till then my friends…..take care of you!

I make bowl cozies for housewarming gifts as all my kids friends seem to be moving into their own homes now. And they all appreciate them, especially the ones who have never cooked. And made a fun little one for our granddaughter as she has to have one now too..lol. I found if you cut the wrap and zap 1/2 inch smaller than your cotton it makes the seams less bulky and a little easier to sew. I make the pointed corners, just my preference. Your store has been my lifesaver since we have limited fabric since our Fabricland closed and I am right now not able to wander a store due to waiting on a hip replacement. Just started reading your blog, and thoroughly enjoying it. Love it!

We’re glad we can help out with your fabric needs, hopefully you’re hip replacement will be coming soon, that must be holding you back from doing so many things! I sincerely appreciate your comment Liz, thank you!
