“Selfish Sewing”!

Ohhhhh how I hate the term “selfish sewing”!! It truly makes me sad when I hear a sewer say “I did some selfish sewing today”! Honestly?!? This usually comes from a person that sews for every other single person on earth on a weekly basis and has finally decided to make themselves a new shirt and for some reason, they feel guilty for doing this “selfish sewing”!!!!!! You go girl, you make that shirt….and then you make a skirt to go with it….and then you’ll need a new bag to go with your new outfit so let alllll the “selfish sewing” commence! Geez, if “selfish sewing” is a crime, throw me in the slammer and throw away the key now cause I’m almost always sewing for moi lol!!

This week I got to check off another project on my “To-Make” list which always makes me happy! What also makes me happy is that the project was a success!

Today was a rainy day here in Southern Ontario so of course I ended up in my sewing room, as one does! I already knew exactly what I wanted to make….shorts for me! I have honestly been looking for shorts since last summer without finding any that I love, just some that “will do for now”, which obviously isn’t great! So, being the maker that I am, why not try making them myself?

Endless Summer Shorts by Winter Wear Designs

I already owned this pattern from Winter Wear Designs that requires cotton woven fabrics, my favourite kind of fabric to sew with! Previously I purchased a few floral fabrics at Funky Monkey Fabrics specifically for this pattern and a few others! The pattern pieces were already printed too so all I had to do today was cut everything out and away I went!

Orchid Wild Meadow Digitally Printed by RJR Fabrics

I decided that I would use Orchid Wild Meadow Digitally Printed by RJR Fabrics for the actual shorts and Kona Black for the pocket linings . I had also previously pre-washed all my fabrics so yet another step was already done!

This pattern comes with a few different variations so it allows you to make it as basic as possible or add pockets, a drawstring, trim, cuffs….you name it, this pattern will show you how!

Here’s my finished shorts and I love them! I chose to do the elastic waist with pockets and I found the instructions for those choices to be very good! Well explained and easy to follow! The only thing I will change next time is to lengthen the legs. They fit great just as they are but my personal preference is that they be longer, probably mid thigh. I’m sorry I don’t have a photo to share with you but my photographer daughter wasn’t home and there’s no way I was going to entrust the photo shoot to my husband lol!

Please share things you’ve whipped up for your own wardrobe too, any and all horror stories are welcome too!

Have a great week everyone, and Happy Sewing!

  1. Love that fabric. I used the same fabric for a purse I made for my mothers in law , and a lunch purse for my niece. Everyone loved the fabric.
